Tugonon is no stranger to the Binibining Pilipinas pageant. She placed first runner-up at Binibining Pilipinas 2011, which was won by Shamcey Supsup. Supsup finished as 3rd Runner-Up to Leila Lopes of Angola at Miss Universe 2011.

On 19 December 2012, Janine Tugonon was the only Asian to place in the Top 5. Philippines placed in the Top 5 for the third consecutive year, after Venus Raj (2010) and Shamcey Supsup (2011).
