Miss Utah 2018 Candidate Dexonna Talbot Launched a platform to raise self confidence through community service

There's nothing quite like helping others for making you feel good about yourself. Getting involved in community service projects can build your self-confidence while you improve the world around you.

Some community service opportunities require an ongoing commitment while others are one-time events. Once you've decided how much time you can give, one way to decide on a project is to decide what issues are most important to you.

The beautiful Dexonna Talbot, who'll be competing for the crown of Miss Utah 2018, launched her own platform called Servesteem: increasing self esteem through service - "I believe my platform is beneficial for all ages and can truly help others reach their full potential as an individual" - she explained.

For her platform Dexonna creates and does one major service project each month and invites all those wanting to participate to be apart of it - "I’ve also had the opportunity to create my own dance program for students with special needs. I have also been able to serve humanitarian projects in both Vietnam and Mexico."

If she wins the crown Dexonna will have the opportunity to represent the state of Utah in Miss America 2019 on September 9, 2018 in Atlantic City. At the end of the event, Miss America 2018, Cara Mund of North Dakota, will officially crown her successor.

Did you know ? Two Miss Utah titleholders have won the Miss America pageant.

JessiKate Riley of Beaver was crowned Miss Utah 2017 on June 17, 2017 at Capitol Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah. She competed for the title of Miss America 2018 on September 10, 2017 in Atlantic City, New Jersey where she won a Preliminary award in Talent as well as a Non-Finalist talent award.

Why did you chose the Miss America system instead of Miss Usa ?

I chose the Miss America line because I love the service opportunities it provides women across the Nation. And it’s focus on the 4 points of the crown being: Service, style, scholarship and success.

Social media seem to play a major role in pageantry nowadays. Do you think this is advantageous to you? Why or why not?

I try to use social media in the most uplifting ways possible. I have created a hashtag #servesteem and a business Instagram account for my platform as well. This is a place where I encourage others to serve those around them and put their best foot forward everyday.

Did you face any moment of disappointment with yourself during the pageant journey, and how did you overcome it?

I placed 2nd attendant for the Miss. Utahs Outstanding Teen pageant 3 years in a row. Each time, although disappointing taught me that there is always room to grow and the only  person I need to be better than is the person I was yesterday.

I understand that I have been given incredible opportunities and circumstances having served in different parts of the world and learning that true joy isn’t found in materialistic things. Where much is given much is required. I am committed to service and the changes I can make with the help of the Miss America organization.
