You won the title of Ms Woman Hawaii United States, what does it entail ?
Winning the title of Ms Woman Hawaii United States requires a great amount of time and dedication to a platform or cause of your choice. Each delegate in the Miss United States Pageant system spends a great deal of time supporting and promoting their platform. During my reign I spent numerous hours volunteering in the community for events such as Prom Giveaway, fashion shows, holiday parades and supporting our military families. I was also able to represeent Hawaii at the Miss United States National Pageant. This was my first pageant and I was able to place 3 rd Runner up! For me that was a huge accomplishment and an honor. However my title has it has recently come to an end. I recently crowned the new Ms Woman Hawaii United States 2018 in February 2018 and I wish her the very best!
What inspired you to walk on the course of beauty pageants?
I became inspired by beauty pageants after the my mom passed away from ALS. I had been bodybuilding for several years up until her going away to be with the Lord. When she passed, I was a bit lost. I lost my fire, and I even lost my faith. I became very doubtful that I would make it. A friend of mine had recommended that I enter the pageant after seeing a head shot contest posted on social media. At that time I was a single mom, recently divorced and had lost my mother. My whole world changed very quickly. I figured the best the thing I could do to recover was to find my inner stength and inner beauty. Today I can honestly say that I am so happy that I took that risk and leaped out on faith.
What do you expect to gain by competing in pageantry?
I enterred the pageant expecting to gain self confidence in a new way. Not just outer beauty. All of the women in pageants are beautiful. But I wanted inner beauty and peace with myself. I needed to know that I was going to be ok and that I could do anything that I wanted in this world. Pageantry gave back everything that I thought I had lost….particularly a new hope and new found faith.
Many misses have said that their dream since a child was to participate in a pageant as prestigious as Miss World (or Miss Universe). It this your case ? And if so, why ?
Yes I would love to participate in Miss World and Miss Universe. If given the opportunity I would jump on it in a heart beat! I would enter simply for the experience of being able to grace the stage with some of the most beauiful women in the world. That would be the ultimate honor!
Social media seem to play a major role in pageantry nowadays. Do you think this is advantageous to you? Why or why not?
I think social media is advantageous for me. It allows my family and friends to know my goals and gives them an opportunity to vote for me and cheer me on. When I was running, and even after my win, I needed this support. I’m from Canada and most of my family is there still, so I’m not sure how I would have made it without social media. In fact, without social media I wouldn’t have even known about Miss United States. I also would not have been able to connect with other delegates throughout the US. For
me personally, social media has been such a positive experience. However, I also think that has a lot to do with the type of message I try to send to the world with each post. I try to always spread positivity. I ignore, delete or even block negativity from my social media feed.
Did you face any moment of disappointment with yourself during the pageant journey, and how did you overcome it?
No I actually didn’t have any moments of disappointment during my pageant journey. I tried to complete everything I set out to do with exellence. I probably dealt with a few negative vibes from people that I thought would be more supportive, but I was able to brush that off rather quickly. Pageants aren’t for everyone and that’s ok!
We’ve all seen the stereotypical portrayals of pageant contestants, a la Miss Congeniality, spreading peace, love and beauty throughout the world. How do you think you'll make a difference ?
I think I’ve made a difference because I have a genuine heart. I’m a mom, a business woman, and I have an education. Some would say after this win, that I have it all. Trust me I do not. But I do have God and the ability to share the lessons that I’ve learned in life. I think that people know that about me and that’s how I think I’ve made a difference.
What would you advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day?
To that young girl who has a dream of being a queen one day, I would say GO FOR IT! You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. As I tell the girls that I mentor, “ In God’s eyes, you are already a Queen. You are now just letting the world know it.”
