Miss Texas USA Candidate Asha Vadlamudi Wants to Prevent Chronic Disease By Promoting Healthy Diet And Lifestyle

Chronic diseases are among the most prevalent and costly health conditions in the United States. Nearly half of Americans suffer from at least one chronic condition, and the number is growing. Chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, respiratory diseases, arthritis and obesity can lead to hospitalization, long-term disability, reduced quality of life and, often, death.

The prevalence of chronic disease has increased steadily among people of all ages in recent years. These diseases affect more than one in two adults and more than one in four children in the United States. More than 25 percent live with multiple chronic conditions.

Asha Vadlamudi, who'll be competing for the crown of Miss Texas USA 2018, is a business analyst for a cardiac device and service company that is developing new technologies to bring efficiencies and better patient care to the healthcare system. As a business analyst, her job is to ensure the product is brought from a vision to a reality - "It has been very rewarding to work in an environment which can directly benefit patients’ lives. I have taken this experience and incorporated it into my passion of prevention of chronic disease" - she explained. Once awarded the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, she created a Wellness Program in partnership with the local senior wellness center in her community.

"The program empowers seniors to take charge of their own health. It is so important to focus on the prevention as we start to see the prevalence of chronic disease in our society rapidly increasing. I have seen many participants in our program who are motivated to improve their health but just do not know how. The wellness program partners with these motivated individuals to help them reach their goals and serve their health needs."

If she wins the Miss Texas USA Pageant the beautiful Asha will have the opportunity to represent her state in Miss USA 2018. Check my interview about her preparation for the upcoming pageant below!

You will compete at the Miss Texas USA Pageant, how do you feel ? How will you prepare the contest ?

I am incredibly excited not only to compete at the Miss Texas USA Pageant but also for the journey that I have been able to experience leading up to the competition. I have focused on preparing myself as a whole for the pageant: mind, body and soul.  Mental preparation and confidence is key when it comes to attaining any goal in life and that is what I have focused on. I believe many of the health and fitness aspects of training for a pageant should be something that is sustainable and not only done in preparation for an event. I was able to find ways to lead an active and healthy lifestyle that will work with my schedule even after the pageant. Feeling good is so important in being able to tackle all of your goals!

What inspired you to walk on the course of beauty pageants?

One year ago, I never thought I would be here competing for Miss Texas USA. I decided to take a huge leap into something I had never done and start competing in pageants earlier this year. I took this leap to prove to myself that you do not have to conform to the mold that society or your culture places you into.

We’ve all seen the stereotypical portrayals of pageant contestants, a la Miss Congeniality, spreading peace, love and beauty throughout the world. How do you think you'll make a difference?

What I have learned since starting my journey in pageants is that there is no truth to the stereotype of a beauty queen. I have met so many diverse women who all have different aspirations and goals and who work hard to achieve them. As an MBA and Master’s student myself, I want young women to see that many of the women who compete are educated and driven. As a young girl, I always had the mindset that I could not be a beauty queen because I did not fit the stereotype. No young girl should feel this about themselves or subjected to a stereotype for any goal they want to accomplish. I hope that I can exemplify the importance of stepping outside the bounds of stereotype.

What would you advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day?

My advice for that young girl who has a dream of being a queen or an astronaut or an athlete or whatever dream it is, is to GO FOR IT! No one and nothing can hold you back from your own desires but yourself. Seek out the resources and the people who are on your team and leave those behind who want to bring you down. It is not easy to chase a dream that you or someone else has told you is out of reach, but nothing is out of reach if you let yourself go for it.
