How A Former Shy Girl Became A Confident Pageant Queen: Meet Betty Kelley, 2018 Miss Tennessee Teen USA Candidate

There are as many reasons for entering a pageant as there are girls entering, and there is a story behind each one. Some enter pageants because their friends or family encourage them, others because their classmates are doing it. And many girls are lured by the enticing prizes, hefty scholarships and visions of future fame. Here's Betty Kelley story of transforming from a shy girl to a confident contestant - "I think a characteristic I am bringing to this competition is definitely my determination. When I set my mind to a goal there is no doubt I will work hard to achieve it! I also am very social and I'm looking forward to getting to meet a lot of new girls Who share the same goal oriented mindset that I do" - she explained.

Growing up she always admired the girls who could compete in pageants but she was so shy it was something she could never see herself actually accomplishing - "Just last year I completed in my county's fair pageant and since then I was hooked! It's so humbling to think that I have transformed from a shy girl to someone who will be competing for the title of Miss Tennessee Teen USA just next month" - she said.

I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful Betty on her preparation for the upcoming pageant.  The state of Tennessee is among the most successful states at Miss Teen USA in terms of number and value of placements. In the 1990s, they were placed first. They have the third (equal) highest number of semi-finalist (or better) placings and are one of only five states to have received more than three awards. Additionally, Tennessee is one of only three states (the other two being Oregon and Texas) to have won the Miss Teen USA title more than once.

You will compete at the Miss Tennessee Teen USA Pageant, how will you prepare the contest ?  What unique characteristics would you say you bring to the competition?

I have been working very hard to get in my best shape both physically and mentally! I have been working hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle but more importantly I have really taken time to get to know myself and my strengths and weaknesses so I can be sure to put my best foot forward when it comes time to take the stage!

Many misses have said their dream  since a child was to participate in a pageant as prestigious as Miss World or Miss Universe is this your case if so why?

Definitely! Since I can remember I have always admired pageant queens. Some of my favorite memories growing up we're watching the Miss America and Miss USA pageants and dreaming that I would be on that stage one day!

Did you face any moment of disappointment with your self during the pageant journey and how did you overcome it?

Absolutely! Every girl that does pageants will certainly face disappointment at least once while competing. It's very hard not to get disappointed when you work so hard and only one girl walks away with the title but you must always stay positive and know that your time is coming! Remember to grow from your past not dwell on it! I am so glad I have had the opportunity to compete in pageants and gain this life lesson at a young age.

What would you advise any younger girl who has a dream of being a queen one day?

I would say to chase your dreams with your whole heart and remember coming home with a crown is not the only way to be a queen!

Who is your ideal beauty queen and how has she helped you to evolve as a beauty queen?

My ideal beauty queen is Olivia Jordan! She is everything I aspire to be as a titleholder. Not only is she beautiful but she is the epitome of classy while still being so fun! I follow her social media accounts and get inspired by her daily!

Thanks to the beautiful Betty for the interview. Pageants News wishes you all the very best for Miss Tennessee Teen USA pageant.
