Sophia Koch Of Germany Would Like To Be The Next Miss Universe To Empower Women

Are beauty pageants feminist or sexist? This has long been a topic of debate. Seeing as Miss Universe is THE highest point of the beauty pageant industry, one can imagine the excitement sweeping when the season arrives.

Being Miss Universe is also a full-time job. You have to travel the world for charity work (it’s not all glitz and glamour despite how it sounds), educate yourself about other countries’ culture and customs, and raise awareness for many issues. Basically a woman is not less feminist simply because she voluntarily delights in pageants, and to shame her for it is actually perpetuating misogyny. If you police a woman’s choice to express her bodily autonomy on a stage because YOU don’t think that fits your definition of feminism, then that’s not feminist.

The gorgeous Sophia Koch, who'll be representing Germany in Miss Universe 2017, thinks that Miss Universe is here to empower women - "It shows that behind a beautiful face is also a strong character and personality that can achieve all the goals a women dreams of. I think that people who see pageants as they are degrading women just see the requirements that we have to dress up nicely in evening gowns and that we also do our hair and makeup but besides that we show by answering questions and giving interviews that our words and the messages we are spreading to the world have a big value and important content" - she explained.

Sophia was born in Halle. She is a Social Studies and German Literature student at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. She loves ballet dancing and speaks 4 languages; German, English, French and Spanish.

I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful Sophia a few days before her departure for the Miss Universe Pageant. Check it below!

What unique characteristics would you say you bring to the Miss Universe competition? How will you prepare the contest ?

I think it is hard to tell if these characteristics are unique under 91 girls from all over the world but I am 100% convinced that I have a big heart and I do everything in life with passion and appreciation. I am confident the way I was born, also my imperfections do not bother me because I know that there is much more behind a beautiful face and in my case it is my personality that developed during the process of growing up. I am natural and stay true to myself in every single way. I put all of my energy in making people happy especially my friends and family because they are what matters to me the most in life and they deserve to be treated in the most beautiful way possible. With small gestures I try to make people happy and feel worthy in my daily life by just sending out smiles, offering my help, asking if they are ok if they seems not to be ok. I try to make a difference and it starts in my own daily life.

I do a lot of catwalk training, watching videos of catwalks that inspire me, I watch interesting documentaries and I also watch my fitness and diet routine. I prepare myself as well with beauty related stuff like manicure and pedicure because TV reveals everything haha.

Social media seem to play a major role in pageantry nowadays. Do you think this is advantageous to you? Why or why not?

Compared to other people on social Media I have a really decent amount of followers. I think it plays an important role in pageantry because next to taking part in charity projects you also play a representative role with that title and you can influence and inspire people as well as you can raise awareness to causes that matter to you through the content you are posting.

How would you describe Germany to your fellow contestants?

I would describe Germany as a beautiful country that maybe can't offer exotic and tropical climates or flora and fauna but we are a really productive country that always wants to make progress not only in our own country but also in the world. We are really welcoming to other people and cultures and do our best to have a very good process of integrating them in our society. We also help wherever we can support countries that have less resources for different kind of reasons.

We have beautiful landscapes and some beaches at the baltic sea have sand that is white as in the Malidives. Even if we are not the biggest country we have a big amount of beautiful cities and each of them is having a unique and individual charm and charisma. You will always find a place that just grabbes your attention and you wanna stay. For me it is Munich I always feel so home when I go there. People from all over the world love the Oktoberfest and it is definitely one of a kind. If you really wanna see a piece of German culture you have to go there.

We’ve all seen the stereotypical portrayals of pageant contestants, a la Miss Congeniality, spreading peace, love and beauty throughout the world. How do you think you'll make a difference ?

I will make a difference by explaining how I wanna achieve these things. I wanna explain my point of view, my thoughts, my emotions, my feelings, my solutions and my experiences to let other people know and understand how we can get peace, love and beauty in our world. The key for me is that we have to impart love and kindness to the children and youth from now on because they are the next generation and they will be able to change things for the better.

What would you advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day?

You are beautiful without surgeries, without the perfect body, without the most symmetrical face because perfection is always up to the eye of the beholder and I think that a women is more than just a beautiful outside even in pageantry. I want every girl that wants to be a beauty queen to stay true to herself and do the things she does because she wants to do them and not because the whole society is screaming that she has to. Because at the end of the day it is her body and with an amazing personality and confidence you can shape your face and body just through showing it to the world because character defines who you are.

Who is your ideal beauty queen and how has she helped you to evolve as a beauty queen?

My ideal beauty queen is Pia Wurzbach because I find her beautiful in every single way. She has a big heart and still under makeup and a beautiful dress I see her natural and sweet side and that fascinates me because she is a strong women and a natural girl at the same time. I cant really tell how she helped me but I just think that I can identify with her and her statements and I can relate to the things she is saying and the messages she is giving to the people. By watching videos of her I always feel inspired and enchanted and I know that I wanna have the same appearance to people but in my own individual way.

Thanks to the beautiful Sophia for the interview. Pageants News wishes you all the very best for Miss Universe pageant.
