Tensions between Israel and Lebanon at Miss Universe

A seemingly innocent photo taken at the Miss Universe pageant has caused a political war of words, after Miss Israel snapped a selfie with Miss Lebanon and two other contestants.
Doron Matalon, Miss Israel, posted the photo last week to Instagram. In the photo, she appears next to Miss Lebanon, Saly Greige, as well as Miss Slovenia and Miss Japan in Miami, where the pageant is held.

According to CTV News Lebanese broadcaster Al Jadeed reportedly criticized Greige, noting that she should have known that the two countries are enemies.
In a weekend Facebook post, she attempted to explain the photo, saying that since arriving in Florida she had been careful to avoid any contact with Matalon. She also accused Matalon of jumping into her photo uninvited, essentially photo-bombing her.

Tensions for Israel at the Miss Universe Pageant

At the 2002 Miss Universe Pageant. It was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Christina Sawaya from Lebanon didn't enter the pageant because she did not want to compete in the same pageant with Miss Israel (Yamit Har-Noy). Miss Lebanon took a stand with the Palestinians. By the way, Yamit Har-Noy (Miss Israel Universe 2002) was a member of the Israel Defense Force, she called Christina Sawaya's decision "very distressing." She said "It is only a beauty pageant. "It has nothing to do with politics."

With so many nations and so much politics, planners must choreograph a delicate diplomatic dance.
