What It Means To Be Italian American - According To Gabriella Decologero

While many people think of the American people as descendents of northern European stock, millions of modern Americans are descended from Italian immigrants. In fact, Italian Americans are the fourth largest ethnic group in America. Overall, an estimated 6 million Italians immigrated to the U.S. between 1820 and 2017.

Over the last decade two women with Italian roots have won the Miss USA Pageant. Will she be the next ? The beautiful Gabriella Decologero will compete in Miss Massachusetts USA later this year and she's proud to be able to call herself an American-Italian - "I was born in Massachusetts but spent most of my childhood growing up Italy with my family where my mom was born. I am 100% Italian and can speak fluently in Sicilian. My double cultural identity has made me extremely blessed and grateful of my cultural background as for who I am today" - she explained.

As she competes for the title of Miss Massachusetts USA she advocates women’s equality and empowering young women to believe they are not inferior or less important than any other man - "I believe that true beauty is held within and by competing in the Miss Massachusetts USA pageant this November I will inspire many young women in our society to gain confidence and truly love them selves for who they are."

Gabriella is currently 19 years old and a sophomore student at Endicott College majoring in business marketing. I had the opportunity to interview her on her preparation for the Miss Massachusetts USA Contest. Lets know a little more about this beautiful and inspiring woman through this interview!

Tell me something about yourself and your work. What do you actually do, and have done in the past?

I would classify myself as an athlete at heart. Fascinatingly, I played competitive ice hockey my whole life. If there were one person I could thank today it would be my father. He is such a brave and caring man who I have always looked up to. My dad is also my mentor and coach in which his support has given me plenty of confidence in competing for my dream job as Miss Massachusetts USA.

I have the biggest passion for ice hockey and will forever be instilled in me. I still play today but not quite as much. I now have found my purpose, which is being able to coach kids with and without disability’s in how to play ice hockey. Giving back to my community is such a great accomplishment of mine. I believe in encouraging confidence upon many young children who aspire to become powerful and reach their goals one day.

I also enjoy being a motivational speaker for many women in our society. At Endicott College, I am involved in the Women’s in Leadership club. We visualize a world in which men and women have equal representation, as well as impact and influence, and promote a community that encourages gender equality. I truly love motivationally speaking out to many individuals and helping any women succeed in their dreams and goals.

You will compete at the Miss Massachusetts USA Pageant, how will you prepare the contest? What unique characteristics would you say you bring to the competition?

To reach my ultimate goal I always prepare to my fullest extent. If you want something in life, you need to work hard for it. Having positive mentality is key to staying focused in succeeding at my goal of taking my dream job of Miss Massachusetts USA. Being a young female ice hockey player competing on both woman and men teams shows my courageousness, and confidence. It’s such an honor to show many people in our generation that being strong can be powerful as well as beautiful.

Did you face any moment of disappointment with yourself during the pageant journey, and how did you overcome it?

I believe that we all face moment’s of disappointment. However, disappointment is what allows for us to become stronger and wiser. I did face moments of disappointment with myself throughout my journey. There would be days where I’d look in the mirror and pick out things that I didn’t like about myself. I knew I could overcome this disappointment by reminding myself how strong and fierce I am. Looking in the mirror, I now see the true inner qualities that lay within me. I see a strong, independent, and confidently beautiful young woman who is ready to take on the world and will not let any man or woman tell me otherwise. If you believe in yourself and listen to your heart your true inner beauty will show as you begin to see your self as for whom you truly are.

What would you advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day?

I would advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day to always stay true to who they are. If you represent yourself to the best of your ability and mentally stay positive you can accomplish any of your dreams and goals. Most importantly, every woman that has the confidence to go up on stage and compete whether it’s their first time or not is already a true queen.

Who is your ideal beauty queen and how has she helped you to evolve as a beauty queen?

My true beauty queen is Olivia Culpo. She carries qualities such as inner and outer beauty, confidence, strength, independence, intelligence, and kindness. She is everything a beauty queen should be and someone I look up to. Olivia is an inspiration to many and definitely a powerful woman who will make a difference in the world. Thank you Olivia Culpo for all you have inspired me to do and become. You are a true queen.

Thanks to the beautiful Gabriella for the interview. Pageants News wishes you all the very best for Miss Massachusetts USA pageant.
