Why some women feel empowered by beauty pageants, according to Chelsea Demby Miss Massachusetts USA Candidate

Beauty pageants have been around for decades, and have been the center of heated debates among women—feminists and non-feminists alike—for just as long. Supporters of pageantry see these competitions as a celebration of women and, in many ways, as a bold refusal to conform to certain cultural and religious norms. For Chelsea Demby, who'll be competing in the Miss Massachusetts USA Contest, it’s an opportunity to get people to finally listen to issues we conveniently put on the back burner - "I have learned so much about myself throughout this journey. It has truly been a very empowering experience for me so far, and I have gained a new level of confidence that I never thought I had in me" - she explained.

As a titleholder she wants to inspire women to compete in pageants, because they do teach you how strong of a woman you really are - "It's important to be confidently beautiful inside and out, and to be that inspiring role model everyone needs" she added.

Chelsea's hometown is Nantucket, Massachusetts which as in Island off the coast of Cape Cod. She is a senior attending Lasell College studying Fashion Communication and Promotion. She hopes to one day work in the fashion and entertainment industry.

I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful Chelsea on her preparation for the Miss Massachusetts USA Contest. This will be her first pageant ever - "I know it will be an amazing experience no matter what the outcome is. I am extremely grateful and excited to be given this opportunity! The Miss Masachusetts USA pageant gives young women a platform to achieve their personal goals, opens many doors, in addition to a variety of career opportunities."

Lets know a little more about her below!

What unique characteristics would you say you bring to the competition?

Unique characteristics about myself would be that I am dedicated, confident, and passionate about representing the amazing state of Massachusetts. Also I have a very exotic nationailty that I am so proud of. I am part Portuguese, Irish, English, Sierra Leonen, and Lebanese. I know that as a titleholder I will represent Massachusetts in the best way possible by promoting what love and kindess is all about!

What inspired you to walk on the course of beauty pageants?

I have always been inspired by watching Miss USA, and Miss Universe. Watching these women have the confidence to put theirselves out there showed me what a true role model is. I finally decided to be that woman and go after my dream of becoming MIss Masschusetts USA.

What do you expect to gain by competing in pageantry?

I expect to gain long lasting friendships, and an unforgettable experience that I can brag about!

Many misses have said that their dream since a child was to participate in a pageant as prestigious as Miss World (or Miss Universe). It it your case ? And if so, why ?

Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to compete in a pageant! I grew up watching Miss USA, and Miss Universe. This will be my first time competing in a pageant, and I have enjoyed every part of prepping for it. I am very dedicated, and determined to do the best I can, no matter what the outcome is.

Social media seem to play a major role in pageantry nowadays. Do you think this is advantageous to you? Why or why not?

Absoultely! I believe social media shows who you are as an individual, and as a titleholder you should be representing your self appropriately. Social media is a great way to connect with others, and to also learn about one another.

Did you face any moment of disappointment with yourself during the pageant journey, and how did you overcome it?

So far I have not faced any dissapointments along my journey, and I believe that when that does happen to just accept it and move on from it. Keeping a positive outlook on everything you do is so important.

We’ve all seen the stereotypical portrayals of pageant contestants, a la Miss Congeniality, spreading peace, love and beauty throughout the world. How do you think you'll make a difference ?

I believe Il'l make a difference by showing women what confidently beautiful means inside and out. As a titleholder I want inspire women to stay true to who they are, and never change. I have seen many women compare themselves to others, and they need to learn that they are beautiful just the way they are. I also feel that I will make an impact by relating to so many different cultures because of my exotic background, by demonstarting the defintion of equality among the world.

What would you advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day?

I would advise her to stay true to herself, and to make the best out of the experience throughout her journey. I would also let her know that most importantly bring on that CONFIDENCE, and remember that you are already a queen no matter what!

Thanks to the beautiful Chelsea for the interview. Pageants News wishes you all the very best for Miss Massachusetts USA pageant.
