How Beauty Pageants Empowered Her as a Woman - Meet Alecia Mccallum from Australia

Beauty pageants have been around for decades, and have been the center of heated debates among women—feminists and non-feminists alike—for just as long. Supporters of pageantry see these competitions as a celebration of women and, in many ways, as a bold refusal to conform to certain cultural and religious norms. For Alecia Mccallum, who'll be competing in the Miss Supranational Contest, it’s an an opportunity it’s an opportunity to get people to finally listen to issues we conveniently put on the back burner. "Pageants to me are actually about empowering women because they have a powerful platform that they can use to be positive role models for young girls and women, to start a career, and to raise money and awareness for multiple charities." she explained.

Alecia is currently studying primary teaching at the University of Newcastle. One of her passions is dancing and performing on stage. One of her favourite things to do in her spare time is reading a book. Lets know a little more about her through this interview!

You competed in the Miss Universe Australia Pageant. What was your most memorable moment from the pageant ? Will you compete again next year ?

My most memorable moment from Miss Universe Australia this year was the national final night when I was on stage. I love being on stage and it is something I will always remember. Yes I will compete again next year, if I don't win Miss Supranational Australia this year in September.

What inspired you to walk on the course of beauty pageants ?

I was inspired to do beauty pageants because of my background in dancing and performing on stage and I also wanted to use the platform to help me start a modelling career.

What would you advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day ?

I would advise any young girl who dreams of being a queen one day to always be yourself and believe in yourself. Also to never give up. From my experience with beauty pageants you will experience  fair bit of disappointment but you can use this disappointment to make yourself more determined and passionate about being a queen because at the end of the day if it is truly your dream to become a queen you will never give up.

Some people think that beauty pageants like Miss Universe are degrading to women. Convince them that they are wrong.

A lot of my most memorable moments are from competing in beauty pageants. Beauty pageants help you with all aspects of life. they help you with presentation of yourself, interviews, public speaking, fitness and health, confidence and it is a great way to make some beautiful lifelong friendships.
