You won the title of Miss Idaho United States 2016. What was the first thing that went through your mind when you won the crown ?
It was such a rush of many emotions. Excitement, happiness and the immense feeling of accomplishment after months of preparation. So many hours behind the scenes go into getting ready to compete that most people don't see. So the relief of knowing your hard work paid off was an amazing feeling.
What does it feel like to be a beauty queen and wear a crown?
The greatest feeling throughout my experience has been the gratitude and humility it has brought. Being a true queen isn't just about wearing a crown, but rather using that crown to give a voice to others who may not have one and using it to be a leader and role model through service.
Being able to help bring awareness to local causes and charitys throughout my community has really been my favorite part of the entire journey.
Did you face any moment of disappointment with yourself during the pageant journey, and how did you overcome it?
I think every pageant competitor feels they could have done more to prepare themselves. Going into Miss United States, I felt extremely confident in myself and what I was bringing to the competition, but with more that 50 girls competing for the same title it is easy to get caught up obsessing over comparing yourself to the other contestants. For me I had to keep in mind that no matter the outcome I had brought my best self and was proud to represent my state on a national stage.
You are an entrepreneur, a makeup artist and a pageant queen. What are you most proud of ?
I'm most proud of my ability to juggle all of those titles! Each role has been key in molding me into the woman I am today. Being behind the scenes as a makeup artist and on stage as a pageant competitor have given me such a vast understanding of the pageant and beauty industry from many perspectives and helped me to become a successful entrepreneur.
You are the founder of Marquess Beauty. How did you get your start?
I have worked as a makeup artist for years, and knew I have always been passionate about the beauty industry and creating my own legacy. Pageants gave me a leg up in the industry and a unique perspective as a consumer, so after using many other brands of Mink, Faux Mink, and regular disposable lashes and giving advice to clients on lash choice, I decided it was time to take the first step in creating my beauty empire and design cruelty free silk lashes I absolutely loved and could recommend to all my clients. Designing these lashes was so exciting, I'm absolutely in love with every style we designed, I cannot wait to continue to expand Marquess into a full product line of cosmetics, and who knows maybe someday fragrance, haircare, and even fashion! The name says it all, Marquess, made for Modern Royalty like all my fellow queens around the world!

A day in Shelby Brown’s life…. How does it go from dawn to dusk?
An average day for me is a hectic one. Heading to the gym in the morning before my day starts is important to keep me balanced. After, depending on the day, I can have either hair and makeup clients scheduled, or meetings and errands to run for Marquess, or sometimes both! Running Marquess Beauty is my main priority right now so if I'm not fulfilling orders I am constantly working on social media, flash sales, marketing, designing new styles and improving the website. After all that, I actually love to cook so I take the time in the evenings to cook for myself. I'm not a true vegetarian or vegan but I love following new recipes to try to be as healthy as I can!
Did you plan to compete in another pageant ?
I always tell myself I am retiring but get the itch to compete when I work a pageant or watch one. I don't think I am done competing just yet. My next goal would be to compete for Miss Idaho USA. Walking on the Miss USA stage would be a dream come true for me.
Who is your favorite beauty queen and why?
My all time favorite beauty queen is Olivia Culpo! I fell in love with her on stage when she competed for Miss USA 2012 and ultimately Miss Universe and have followed her journey ever since. She is a successful entrepreneur who I definitely view as one of my role models.
How do you imagine your life in ten years?
What I imagine and what my reality is going to be will probably be vastly different. Not in a bad way, but looking back on my life in the last 4 years I have gone through so many changes and switched direction in a way I wouldn't have imagined that I think trying to plan our lives down to every detail sets us up for failure. I have learned that sometimes going the way life pushes you is where you need to be and you have to trust in the universe's plan! All I can do is keep working on the path I am keep pushing in my dream of running Marquess as a multifaceted empire!
