Savvy Shields is Miss America 2017

Savvy Shields from Arkansas was crowned Miss America 2017 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on September 11. She will travel about 20,000 miles a month, changing her location every 24 to 48 hours, touring the nation and promoting her particular platform of interest.
She is the third contestant from Arkansas to win the national title. Other Miss Arkansas titleholders who went on to become Miss America are Miss Arkansas 1982 Elizabeth Ward and Miss Arkansas 1964 Donna Axum.
"In pageants it's very difficult to not compare yourself to every other girl in front or behind of you," Shields said

Shields' platform as Miss Arkansas was "Eat better, live better." “Arkansas is now one of the most obese states in the country and it's scary to think about that,” she said.

She said her healthy eating habits changed in college and led to a number of health problems. Now she hopes to educate, inspire and enable healthier lifestyles in her home state.

Shields is a junior at the University of Arkansas. Her talent is contemporary dance.
