Miss USA

Brandi Brown Takes a Stand for Curvy Women at Miss New York USA

It will be her first participation in a pageant. The beautiful Brandi Brown, 26, will compete for the title of Miss New York USA 2018 later this year. New York is one of the most successful states at Miss USA, and is ranked third in terms of number and value of placement across all years of competition. New York's strongest run was an unbroken string of placements from 1957 to 1966. New York also had a streak of 3 consecutive 1st runner-up placements from 1972 to 1974. If Shanna Moakler is counted, New York has the third (equal) highest number of Miss USA victories. They also have the third highest number of semi-finalist (or better) placings (33).

Who is Brandi Brown ? She currently works full time in the pediatric department as scheduling maintenance at a medical group in Westchester County, NY. She is also a self taught fashion designer, and run her own fashion design business "BQueen". "I started BQueen in order to make all women, all shapes and sizes feel like the queen they are in a custom garment made just for them using their own unique measurements." she explained.

Everyone’s body type is unique and pageantry can have a place for every girl. On stage and in the interview room, be proud of who you are. There is room for every background, age, and size in pageantry.  Brandi explained that many people told her "you're to short to do pageantry" or "you're to thick to do pageantry". That's why she started studying pageant systems and what they stood for - "I was shocked to find out its way more than having a gorgeous face or looking picture perfect in a swimsuit. Its about knowing who you are as a person, having a voice, and being aware of whats going on around you in today's society for the most part. I was very disappointed in myself for wanting to alter my appearance to fit in, instead of trying to lose the weight my focus is now on toning!"

I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful Brandi on her preparation for the next Miss New York USA Pageant. Lets know a little more about her below!

You will compete at the Miss New York USA Pageant. How will you prepare the contest ?

I am so excited about this new venture, and this experience couldn't come at a more perfect time for me. In preparation for the competition I've been working with Michelle Holmes of Prepare to win on everything from stage presence to preparing for the interview portion of the competition. I don't think anything can mentally prepare you for whats to come, you just have to have confidence in yourself and complete faith that you will leave the judges speechless.

What would you advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day?

My advice to any young girl who has a dream in general is to follow it, turn your dreams into reality. Never let someone discourage you from fulfilling your dream, as you must do what ultimately make you happy. My characteristics are what sets you apart from everyone else, there is nothing wrong with being different. So again i encourage any young girl who has a dream of becoming a queen one day to follow that dream, anything is possible, believe in yourself and never give up.

Did you face any moment of disappointment with yourself during the pageant journey, and how did you overcome it?

This being my first pageant i found myself trying to fit in to what i thought was "the pageant girl" look. I didn't think i was going to be accepted being a curvier woman, and with that being said i wanted to lose an extreme amount of weight. I was willing to lose who i am as a woman in order to fit into what i thought the pageant world considered "normal'.

We’ve all seen the stereotypical portrayals of pageant contestants, a la Miss Congeniality, spreading peace, love and beauty throughout the world. How do you think you'll make a difference ?

I was diagnosed with anxiety last October, it was pretty devastating because it came out of nowhere. While being in a state of depression i found myself asking god "why me" i didn't understand what was going on with my mind. I stopped going out, i cried almost everyday, i didn't even want to be around people at all most days. A year later i'm feeling stronger and more powerful than ever. Now that i can think with a clear head, i can honestly say everything happens for a reason. God didn't throw this curve ball my way in order to harm me or to bring me down, but instead to build me up. This is indeed my purpose, and i will use my purpose to make a difference in the lives of those who suffer from mental illness in the state of New York and hopefully one day around the world.

What inspired you to walk on the course of beauty pageants?

I used to do some modeling, and as a fashion designer i'm not a stranger to walking in front of a lot of people. What really made me apply for Miss New York USA was after watching Miss USA 2016 with Dishauna Barber taking the crown. That honestly gave me so much hope, to actually witness a beautiful woman who looks like me win the title was so inspiring to me.

Your favorite beauty queen ?

My favorite beauty queen would have to be Deshauna Barber. All of her answers at Miss USA 2016 were so clean, well delivered and ON POINT!. She is a woman who serves our country, and not to mention she still made time to do so during her reign as Miss USA. I'm so happy that even after he reign as Miss USA she continues to let her voice be heard by doing public speaking engagements and through her YouTube channel, Shes like my best friend in my head lol.
