Karla de Beer is Miss World New Zealand 2016

Karla de Beer, a 22-year-old University of Auckland graduate, was crowned Miss World New Zealand 2016 on June 4th at the Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland. She will have the opportunity to compete at Miss World 2016 later this year.

On her Miss Auckland profile, de Beer said she has hopes of starting her own makeup business or becoming a clinical psychologist. She was born in Pretoria, South Africa and moved to New Zealand at the age of eleven.

Karla succeeds Miss World New Zealand 2015 Deborah Lambie; Lambie made the Top 20 and the Top 5 at Multimedia Award at the 2015 Miss World Competition in China.

New Zealand has contested 46 Miss World pageants since that pageant's inception in 1951. No New Zealander has won the Miss World title, although two have placed first runner-up. The peak of the national pageant's popularity was in the 1980s when the event was televised on TVNZ. Interest waned in the 1990s as the contests suffered from political correctness, faced opposition from feminists and struggled to gain sponsorship
