How To Mentally Prepare For A Pageant - According to Nadia Lavoie, Miss Universe Canada Candidate

Is the mental game important to your success in pageants? The top titleholders think so. Most contestants and directors believe that controlling the mind is vital to your success in pageantry. We all know that we must think positive and believe we can win.

Confidence and Self-Image plays a huge role in being able to perform at your best when the judges are in control of your score. You have to have the ability to succeed but you also have to be able to stand out as the “winner” to those who hold your fate in their hands. Mental Management is a great way to learn how to use pressure to your advantage, build self-image, focus on your strengths, get your goals and gain the confidence needed to live up to your potential.

The gorgeous Nadia Lavoie, who will be competing for the title of Miss Universe Canada later this year, thinks that preparing for an event like this is not just about the physical aspect - "You need to know how to deal with your stress, you need to learn a lot about yourself and you need to figure out if you’re doing it for the good reasons." she explained.

She has been very busy those last months to prepare for the national competition and to be ready. For the last three months, she had a personnal trainer - "I had to follow a strict nutrition plan and I had to go to the gym four to five times a week to get the results I wanted. One thing very interesting I learned when I was reading «Awaken the giant within» from Tony Robbins is «you feel good and know that you’re in control of your life in a body that radiates vitality and allows you to accomplish your outcomes». How can you achieve what you want if you don’t take care of yourself first ? I wasn’t only seeing a personnal trainer but I was also seeing a life coach."

I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful Nadia on her preparation for the next Miss Universe Canada Pageant. Lets know a little more about this inspiring woman below!

Tell me something about yourself and your work. What do you actually do, and have done in the past?

I was born and raised in Saguenay, a beautiful little city in Quebec province. If you know «poutine» and Céline Dion, here’s where I come from ! I had a lovely childhood. My parents raised me with a lot of love, they teached me good values such as respect, loyalty, family and self-accomplishment. My parents don’t come from wealthy families so they taught us to appreciate little things in life. At a young age I begin to figured out my interest in helping my friends and people around me. I was a very generous and attentionate child.

Later, when I attended high shcool, I began to experience what a lot of young adults are experiencing : intimidation. I wasn’t confident at all. I was coming back from school crying and asking myself how people could be so rude. This is how I decided I would help people in my life, because I knew what it was to suffer and to feel like you don’t know where you’re heading when you have no self-esteem. To this day, it’s been five years that I’m working as a bachelor nurse. Also, I’ve been working as a model for ten years now. I wanted to show people that it’s possible to achieve your dreams and to accomplish beautiful things even if at some point it’s hard in your life. My biggest dream would be to teach people about self-accomplishment. I also dream of doing humanitarian aid one day in my career and to give to people in need.

What inspired you on the course of beauty pageant ?

The opportunity to become an ambassador for two organizations : Operation Smile and SOS Children’s villages. As a nurse, helping people is something I always wanted to do. This would be an amazing platform for me to achieve one of my dream to do humanitarian aid. I saw Miss Universe Canada also like a platform to be a role model for people and to teach them about self-accomplishment.

What does it feel like to be a beauty queen and wear a crown?

I guess it’s an amazing thing. Because it allows you to become a positive role model for people around you. It allows you to achieve wonderful things and to help people. I learned a lot about myself in my life and wearing the crown would be for me an amazing opportuniy to accomplish things that are far beyond my expectations. One quote by Marianne Williamson that I really like is « Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.» We can accomplish everything we want when we begin to believe in our power as a human.

What would you advise any young girl out there who has a dream of being a queen one day?

I would say to them to do everything they want to accomplish their dreams one day. No matter what. I would look at those young girls and I would see myself in them so I’ll teach them about being confident and about self-esteem. I would also teach them to be kind, because being kind is one of the most beautiful thing in the world. When you give to someone, it’s the best feeling ever.

We’ve all seen the stereotypical portrayals of pageant contestants, a la Miss Congeniality, spreading peace, love and beauty throughout the world. How do you think you'll make a difference ?

Pageants are not just about beauty. It allows young womens to accomplish themself. It’s an amazing platform for us to be heard. We all have different motivations, we come from different places, we’re all different, but what is beautiful about pageant is that it give the opportunity for all these women to achieve their dreams. Pageant show to people the inner beauty that we all have and how to become a positive role model. It allows us to implicate ourself in our community and to make a difference. We don’t just spread peace, love and beauty throughout the world, we’re spreading what it is to be a better human.

Your favorite beauty queen ?

I would say Alecia Beth Moore (Pink), because she is a positive role model for a lot of women. She is so inspiring and she taught me about staying true to myself many times.
