She comes from Trinidad & Tobago a dual-island nation in the southern Caribbean, located a mere 7 miles off the coast of Venezuela. Yvonne Clarke's dream of being Miss Universe' first began at age 9, when Wendy Fitzwilliam was crowned in 1998 - "It was one of the few nights in my childhood where my parents allowed me to stay up late, so it was a very exciting experience. Watching Ms. Fitzwilliam's grace, dignity, and class on the international stage as she represented Trinidad and Tobago on that incredible night as she was crowned the winner of the Miss Universe pageant inspired me to realize that, even in the small twin-island Republic of 1.3 million people, we all have the potential to shine as an example for the rest of the world to follow, admire and celebrate" - she explained.

If she wins the national pageant Yvonne will have the opportunity to represent her beautiful island at the 2017 Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas. The beauty contest has been held annually since 1963 a year after its independence from the United Kingdom. It debuted in 1963 when Jead Stodart, Miss Y de Lima 1963 was crowned the Carnival Queen of Trinidad by National Carnival Committee and went to the Miss Universe 1963 in the United States.

Yvonne is a medical student in the area of clinical sonography, specializing in obstetrics - "My line of study allows me to ensure that my female patients and their unborn offspring are healthy. Child-bearing is a wondrous, incredible gift granted by God to women, and being a part of this delicate process is indeed a remarkable experience that I will always appreciate, because it is a testament of the strength and resilience of a woman."

Additionally, she owns a small business where she sells women's shoes, clothing and accessories. As a Fashion CEO, styling other women on a daily basis gives her great joy – "it’s a great feeling of satisfaction to see the look of confidence that my loyal female customers have when they leave my store, ready to face the world with renewed self-assurance."

The feeling of being Irish and patriotic always comes on strongest around St Patrick’s Day. To see a day being celebrated all over the world just for Ireland is really quite exciting and moving to see. Irish people, it can be agreed, have one thing in common… they all love to talk about being Irish. So what does it exactly mean ? Cailín Áine Ní Toibín, who'll be competing for the crown of Miss Universe 2017 later this year, always wanted to be a representative of her country & her people and give them a voice on an international platform -  "Ireland is passionate about supporting people who embody our culture and what it means to be Irish. Ireland is a beautiful country full of genuine people, we are a nation built on being a peaceful arbiter for many years back as far as time can tell." she explained

The beauty queen wants to promote Ireland to the world in a way that it excites them to come and expand their knowledge on how they live in her country.

Cailín Áine Ní Toibín loves that Miss Universe is a pageant that celebrates women of all nationalities, colours and ethnicities - "These women are driven to discuss topical issues such as mental health which is the platform that I have chosen to be an advocate for as it is a topic that has been a part of my life since I was born, in Ireland it is a topic that is shadowed over because of our religious background and I hope to bring that to the forefront this year and de stigmatise mental health here in Ireland and abroad."

I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful Cailín Áine Ní Toibín on her preparation for the next Miss Universe Pageant. Check it below!

She ended Guyana's drought at Miss World. Now, Rafieya Husain is poised to do the same for Guyana at the 2017 Miss Universe Contest. Born in Guyana and spent much of her young life in the country, the beauty queen later moved to the United States where she pursued her higher education. Rafieya is described as someone that is determined to affect change and provide the women who are of the system with the skill sets they need to be successful leaders of tomorrow.

Having been a victim herself of domestic violence, Rafieya has worked tirelessly to raise awareness and to educate young people on the early signs of dating violence. In her efforts to improving the lives of those affected by domestic violence, she has established an outreach centre on the Essequibo Coast in Guyana under the name RIVA.

Pageant followers are highly positive about Rafieya’s chances at Miss Universe, and who knows she might just win an international crown this year. I had the opportunity to chat with her only a few days after her crowning as the new Miss Universe Guyana. I hope you will enjoy this interview!

When people think of pageants, they get a certain mental image based on what they have seen from watching them on TV and from stories in the news. However, most people don't understand what these pageants are like from the perspective of an insider. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and it’s crazy to see that in several beauty contests lack of height somehow contributes to lack of beauty. That’s the age old stereo type we are here to break down.  Consider this Miss America crowned their first beauty queen in 1921 and she was 5’1″, after that there have only been five petite queens throughout the pageants history.

The beautiful Shanelle Connell, who will be competing for the crown of Miss Universe Canada 2017 this weekend, is ready to make history as one of the shortest contestants to go to Miss Universe - "I am excited to show my country and the world the capacity us shorter women have to rock the stage. The typical pageant height that you look up online is 5’7, 5’9, etc. I am not of that height… I stand proud at my fierce and petite height of 5’3. And no where does the Miss Universe organization say that to be a great ambassador of your country means you have to be average model height." she explained

So who is Shanelle Connell ? She initially went into university to become a Computer Scientist and now she's aiming to specialize in Relationship and Marriage Counselling with a BA in Psychology. But she wanted to get a Graphic Design Diploma  - "I honestly could laugh when I think about it because it sounds like I was all over the map, but the truth is every skill and network outreach I've acquired through that process has gotten me where I am today. I have the ability to brand myself without spending a fortune on a design company, I can fix codeing errors if I need to, and I know how to integrate psychological influence in order to establish my online persona in a clear, concise manner."

The magnetic personality of a title holder can attract people’s attention to sensitize the public about targeted social problems. This in turn helps raise funds for their eradication. The cause differs from country to country depending on the local problems. Tuuli Koskiaho, who will be competing in Miss Finland 2017, would like to spread warmth, good spirit and fight against discrimination if she wins. "Being in a beauty pageant has been my dream since I was a little girl. As a child I was attracted by all the beauty and glamour like any other little princess but as I grew older I realized that being a beauty queen is so much more than just the external things. Beauty queen is a goodwill ambassador and she is interested in other people and things happening around her." she explained

Tuuli also considers that a beauty queen should be down to earth. The story is too common, every year in the Miss Universe Pageant we heard that several candidates consider themselves as Divas. So, don’t let success go to your head. Be humble. Humility is a sign of strength, not weakness. People with humility possess an inner peace. They’re modest about their achievements, grounded in their values, and they have nothing to prove to others. They’re down to earth, comfortable in their own skin, and quietly proud.

I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful Tuuli on her preparation for the next Miss Finland Pageant. The beauty queen currently studies nordic languages in the university of Helsinki. She works part time in a grocery store and has been working in customer service for few years now. Lets know a little more about this beautiful and inspiring woman through this interview!
