A glimpse into the world of beauty pageants with Ashley Darcy Miss Nevada Collegiate

When you think modern beauty pageants, your first thought may go to Miss Congeniality or Miss America. Regardless of which springs first into your mind, you may not realize how far back this tradition of celebrating women goes. Beauty and strength are universally celebrated in our society.

"Pageants are not just about the gowns and crowns". Ashley Madison Darcy begs to differ. She believes they can play a role in the betterment of society. The reigning Miss Nevada Collegiate America enjoys giving back to her community. She promotes a program called B.R.A.V.E (Building Respect And Values for Everyone). Read on and discover her story!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself

I am 19 years old and attend the University of Nevada Las Vegas where I am a Hospitality Business Management major. I have a passion for modeling, fashion, hot platies, photography and pageants. I am the reigning Miss Nevada Collegiate America and I enjoy giving back to my community while spreading my national platform, B.R.A.V.E (Building Respect And Values for Everyone).

How has competing in pageants shaped you to be the person you are today?

Pageantry has taught me how to embrace who I am. Pageants are not just about the gowns and crowns, it’s about the sisterhood and friendships made. The confidence, poise and public speaking has helped shaped who I am today. A crown and sash has given me a voice to share my story with others.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced in your life?

My biggest challenge has been my vision. I was born with an eye condition called Strabismus and I started wearing glasses at 5 months old. I have endured 10 eye surgeries, eye patches, eye muscle exercises and lots of teasing while trying to correct my eyes. This life experience has taught me not to take health for granted and to have sympathy for others that battle with uncontrollable struggles.

Your favorite beauty queen?

I adore Miss America, Savvy Shields. I love her contagious smile and bubbly personality. Her confidence and originality is inspirational. Savvy sets a great example for giving back to her community. I hope to follow in her shoes as I compete for Miss Collegiate America and be crowned as she was in 2013.

Where do we hope to see you in the next 10 years?

In 10 years, I plan to be a college graduate working in my career field. I see myself traveling the world especially to Bora Bora, Thailand and Disneyland in Tokyo. I hope to begin a personal and lifestyle blog in the future.

If there’s one message that you would like everyone to hear so people can know who you are as a person, what would that message be?

The lesson I learned as a young girl is a message I carry with me today. My mom taught my sister and I the golden rule which is, to treat others the way you would like to be treated. I believe living by this message in all aspects of life will lead to a positive and happy life.
