Monika Radulovic was crowned Miss Universe Australia 2015 in Melbourne, but the beauty queen has a particular message to tell as a refugee. She talked about her difficult story and why her parents decided to choose Australia.
Monika Radulovic Miss Universe Australia 2015 is Bosnian
“I have a unique back story. I was born in Bosnia but my parents packed up their whole lives in a suitcase and fled the country when the Yugoslavian war broke out when I was just 2 years old. After living as refugees in Denmark for a year, we migrated to Australia.”
Because of this experience, I know first hand how amazing Australia is- it whole heartedly opened its arms to my family and in turn has blessed me with so many wonderful opportunities (including this competition).
I believe I would make a great Miss Universe Australia because I embody what makes Australia so beautiful– our multiculturalism, and I would love to use the Miss Universe Australia title as a platform to be an ambassador of Australia and sing its praises to the rest of the world!”
Monika Radulovic’s inspiration
Monika has “huge admiration” for her parents. They migrated to a foreign country with nothing but the shirts on their backs. They had to completely start all over again- learn a new language, find a new career path, and on top of that Monika’s mum was 8 months pregnant with her younger brother when they arrived!
With all these challenges they faced, they made sure Monika and her brother never felt any of these struggle and put them and their needs completely ahead of their own. “I had such an amazing childhood thanks to them and their courage, bravery and love inspires me every day.” said Miss Universe Australia 2015.
