“A year and a half ago, she left for the Miss USA competition as an unknown college sophomore.
Next week, Olivia Culpo will return home to Cranston with a superstar boyfriend in Nick Jonas, career advice from Donald Trump and boxes full of “fan art” — paintings and sculptures of Culpo’s likeness given to her on a recent trip to Indonesia — waiting for her in her childhood bedroom.
But she’ll no longer have a crown. Culpo’s beauty pageant reign comes to an end Saturday when she gives up her Miss Universe title at this year’s competition in Moscow.
Her immediate plans include flying back to the United States with her family and spending some time relaxing in Edgewood. Then Culpo, 21, wants to pursue the goal that drove her to enter the Miss Rhode Island USA competition: a Hollywood acting career.
“At this point I’m so exhausted, I’ll say I need at least a month at home,” she says recently in the Manhattan apartment she’s been sharing with Miss USA and Miss Teen USA. “I’ll be there for a little bit and then I’ll be going back and forth between there and L.A. when the pilot season picks up. We’ll see what doors open.”
Other than playing a small role in the not-yet-released film “The Other Woman,” starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton and Leslie Mann, and taking a few acting classes, Culpo put her movie ambitions on hold to fulfill her duties as Miss USA and Miss Universe.
Her schedule has included 4:30 a.m. wakeup calls, regular international travel and serving as a spokesperson for HIV/AIDS prevention. The job has been rewarding but challenging, she said.
“Being able to travel and give back, that’s the highlight,” she says, sitting at her dining room table across from a window overlooking Sixth Avenue and Central Park. “From the outside in, it looks glamorous, but from the inside out, it’s not as glamorous as you might think.”
Recently back from a 10-day trip to India, Culpo is jetlagged. Heavy makeup can’t quite conceal the tiredness around her eyes, and locks of hair have come loose from her braid and fallen onto her face.
Rhode Islander Olivia Culpo talks about her year traveling the world as Miss Universe, helping to promote various charities. She says it has been exhausting, but highly fulfilling work.
The job has afforded her opportunities including the chance to attend movie premieres and fashion shows, serve as a guest co-host on the entertainment news program “Extra” and model for Miss Universe sponsors such as CHI hair products. But she’s also experienced some of the downside of being in the spotlight.
Controversy has bookended Culpo’s pageant career: After she was crowned Miss USA in June 2012, a rival for that honor, Miss Pennsylvania Sheena Monnin, resigned her title and charged that the pageant was “rigged.” A federal judge later ordered Monnin to pay Miss Universe organization co-owner Donald Trump $5 million in damages for the unfounded claims. Then last month, Culpo learned that Indian police had filed a case against her for an unauthorized photo shoot at the Taj Mahal.”
